Signet Recording

Why record with Signet

Some leading Southdown Breeders have joined the Signet recording scheme so that they can take a more scientific approach to selecting top performing stock, improving their flocks and the breed. The scheme also allows performance information to be made available to commercial and pedigree flocks.

How does the recording scheme work

The Signet recording scheme collects genetic and performance data (eg parentage, 8 week weights, 21 week weights, eye muscle depth, lambing percentage etc) and uses this to calculate an Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) for a range of traits. The calculation "levels the playing field" by minimising differences in performance due to management and highlighting genetic potential. A key measure for commercial flocks is the Terminal Sire Index, this is a composite score based on 21 week weight, muscle and fat depth.
